INFORMATION
This introduction to figure skating program is designed to serve as a transitional program into STARSkate. Skaters will continue to learn the important basic lessons in CanSkate as they continue to work towards completing their badges while learning basic figure skating skills in a group setting.
This Program runs along with our Sr. StarSkate program with one session being ran on private ice. Skaters will also receive a session of Off-Ice to learn the basics of off-ice training needed for figure skating
The Jr. StarSkate program teaches skaters the fundamental skills needed to become a figure skater.
We run this program on Wednesdays 4:45-5:45 pm and Fridays 1:30-2:30 pm with Off-ice training 2:45-3:30 pm following On-ice training.
EQUIPMENT & ATTIRE
Skates: Skaters at this level should be in a sturdy boot with a quality blade. Sharpening should be performed by a trained professional.
On-ice attire: Skaters should wear athletic clothing on the ice in layers. Clothes should be form fitting or close to it, to allow coaches to see the body line for proper execution of technique. Baggy, loose fitting attire is not acceptable. Gloves should be worn versus mittens, if the temperature permits, to allow for more articulation of the hands and fingers.
Off-ice attire: All skaters should be in appropriate active wear for the off-ice class they will be attending. Appropriate footwear must be worn as per the class they will be attending i.e. ballet shoes for ballet class, running shoes for fitness class etc
Helmets: For skaters below Canskate Stage 5, CSA approved hockey helmets are required.
For skaters above Stage 5 Canskate that may be nervous about skating without a helmet, you are welcome to leave your helmet on as long as you like. Yours and your parents’ comfort is important to us.
ASSESSMENTS
As the skaters finish up their CanSkate badges they will move onto the Star 1-5 Assessments. Assessment from STAR 1-5 are done by coach assessors, making it as close to a regular practice as possible. These assessments are done on regular practice ice with a coach marking the skater.
COMPETITIONS
Skaters at this level are eligible to compete if they wish. It is up to every family to decide whether or not they would like to participate in competitions. The Kootenay region provides three competitions a year: the West Kootenay Invitational (WKI) the East Kootenay Invitational (EKI) and the Regionals located in Creston BC.
